Automation Expo 2022 Focus on IIoT, Robotics and Building Automation
Published on : Wednesday 08-06-2022
Bigger, better, stronger – Automation Expo returns after two years of pandemic as a physical event from 16th to 19th August, 2022.
Automation Expo 2022, now in its 15th edition, will be held from 16th to 19th August, 2022, at the Bombay Convention & Exhibition Centre. Organised by IED Communications, the event spread across Halls 1 & 2 will have on display thousands of products and live demonstrations of the latest technologies from the world of automation and IIoT, powering the process plants and discrete manufacturing industries. Automation Expo returns in the physical format after a gap of three years due to the disruption caused by the pandemic.
According to a Technavio report released in early 2022, the industrial automation and instrumentation market in India is estimated to grow by USD 1.92 billion from 2020 to 2025, and the market's growth is anticipated to accelerate at a CAGR of 8.62%. The report observes that the market in India is fragmented, and vendors are deploying various organic and inorganic strategies to compete by deploying growth strategies such as adopting competitive pricing and low-cost customisation options for enhancing the opportunities for penetration of their services.
Among the Special Interest Areas at Automation Expo 2022 are the IIoT Zone, Robotics Cluster and Building Automation Zone.
The surge in IIoT technologies
The IIoT (Industrial Internet or Industry 4.0) market is expected to grow from USD 76.7 billion in 2021 to USD 106.1 billion by 2026, at a CAGR of 6.7% during the forecast period. The growth of the IIoT industry is driven by factors such as technological advancements in semiconductor and electronic devices, increased use of cloud computing platforms, standardisation of IPv6, and support from governments of different countries for R&D activities related to IIoT as per a report by MarketsandMarkets.
However, it is the APAC region that holds the largest share of the market, in terms of value, in 2021. Asia Pacific is a major hub for industrial manufacturing and has become a global focal point for significant investments and business expansions. The growing population, rising investments for R&D activities, and the increasing focus of international and domestic IT companies on the growth of big data analytics and cloud-based services in the region are expected to drive the growth of this market.
The application of IIoT is witnessing phenomenal growth in recent years. In the industrial segments, it is enabling the acquisition and accessibility of far greater amounts of data, at far greater speeds, and far more efficiently than ever before. A number of innovative companies have started Industry 4.0 initiatives and are driving IIoT projects to make their factories smart factories.
IIoT is unleashing enormous value by digitally enabling factory floors, products, workers and more. It is drastically changing the way companies work internally, collaborate with each other and sell to customers. Industrial companies will move to more agile ecosystems and alliances with new partners.
Success will depend on the key enablers such as the deployment of the right technology, readiness of the digital workforce, the apt ecosystems and cyber-security. As data-driven services and insights gain importance, organisations need to focus on deploying cyber resilience.
Robots gaining traction
Robots are playing a wide and dynamic role in daily life, bringing unprecedented efficiencies in industrial, commercial and even domestic applications. The Covid-19 pandemic has struck a big blow for increased use of robotic technologies, dispelling many myths, the foremost being that robots are too expensive to deploy.
The World Robotics 2021 Industrial Robots report shows a record of 3 million industrial robots operating in factories around the world – an increase of 10%. Sales of new robots grew slightly at 0.5% despite the global pandemic, with 384,000 units shipped globally in 2020. This trend was dominated by the positive market developments in China, compensating the contractions of other markets. This is the third most successful year in history for the robotics industry, following 2018 and 2017.
Global robot installations are expected to rebound strongly and grow by 13% to 435,000 units in 2021, thus exceeding the record level achieved in 2018,” reports Milton Guerry, President of the International Federation of Robotics. “Installations in North America are expected to increase by 17% to almost 43,000 units. Installations in Europe are expected to grow by 8% to almost 73,000 units. Robot installations in Asia are expected to exceed the 300,000-unit mark and add 15% to the previous year’s result. Almost all Southeast Asian markets are expected to grow by double-digit rates in 2021.
The Indian Industrial Robotics market is estimated to grow at 13.3% CAGR from 2019-2024. “India is one of the strongest growing economies among the emerging markets in Asia,” says Junji Tsuda, President of the International Federation of Robotics. Regarding annual installations, India now ranks eleventh in the global annual supply – three places higher compared to the previous year and ahead of Singapore, Canada and Thailand.
Building automation brings energy efficiency
Building automation is the automatic centralised control of a building's HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning), electrical, lighting, shading, access control, security systems, and other interrelated systems through a Building Management System (BMS) or Building Automation System (BAS). The objectives of building automation are improved occupant comfort, efficient operation of building systems, reduction in energy consumption, reduced operating and maintaining costs, increased security, historical performance documentation, remote access/control/operation, and improved life cycle of equipment and related utilities.
The distributed control system – the computer networking of electronic devices designed to monitor and control the mechanical, security, fire, lighting, HVAC and humidity control and ventilation systems in a building or across several campuses. Security & access control systems have become the essential part of several industry verticals, owing to rising security concerns in every sector.
The growing deployment of building automation systems in large office buildings, shopping complexes, and public transport areas, such as railway stations and airports, is expected to drive the market growth for building automation and controls systems.
The global building automation and controls market size is expected to witness significant growth during the forecast period, owing to the rising need for advanced energy-efficient interventions. Smart building solutions help engineers optimise the base load of the building to monitor power consumption by the major building systems, such as HVAC or lighting and others, which improve the energy efficiency of buildings. There has been an increase in adoption of IoT and AI integrated electronics and computing systems. IoT technology when integrated in an electronic system provides remote access to the user.
The meeting ground
When the curtains are raised on Automaton Expo 2022 in mid-August, technologies pertaining to these areas and more would be on display from global vendors and their domain experts would be at hand to explain them at length. Physical exhibitions offer several advantages over their digital counterparts, the greatest being the networking opportunities available at the venue. Deals are easily struck when applications are demonstrated and doubts cleared in person – a trust building exercise.
Launched in the year 2002, the Automation Expo series is the brainchild of Dr M Arokiaswamy, Chairman & Managing Director, IED Communications. Automation Expo is continuously mentored and guided by a Board of Governors comprising over 45 seasoned professionals from the automation industry, all of whom are present during the show. Their collective expertise guides the organizers in keeping the event in tune with the latest trends of the industry, as well as meeting the requirements of the current needs of the industry.
